Who will win the UFC 280 Makhachev vs Oliveira?

The upcoming Makhachev vs. Oliviera mixed martial arts showdown set up by the Ultimate Fighting Championship is set to take place in the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. The match, set to be held on October 22nd, is going to be a Fight Island pay-per-view back in the UAE, and fans are already placing bets. On Saturday, the match’s confirmation was announced as part of the UFC Long Island broadcast. Aljamain Sterling, the current bantamweight champion, and TJ Dillashaw. A previous titleholder will square off in the other main attraction of the show. Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliviera are headlining the diverse and exciting fight card with what is sure to be a brutal title fight.  The winner will be crowned the UFC Lightweight Champion. The main question on everyone’s minds is, who’s going to win?

Charles Oliviera

Charles Oliviera has proven himself with the streak he’s been on. Since 2018, 4 years ago, it’s been win after win for him. Totalling an unbroken chain of 11 wins, Oliviera is bent on getting one more, and clearly, it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for him.

During UFC 262 in May of 2021, the 32-year-old defeated Michael Chandler via a technical knockout during round number two of their bout. This is where he laid claim to the then-vacant lightweight division championship. At UFC 269 in December of 2021 was when Oliviera successfully defended his title against Dustin Poirier, winning by submission during the third round of the bout. This is where his championship defence streak came to a halt, though not in the cage. Which is a significant point as his fans say he wasn’t truly beaten. The reason UFC 274, his next match in May defending his championship from Justin Gaethje, was unsuccessful, was that Oliviera could not get past the weigh-in. Oliviera was catchweight at the time, and Gaethje tried him but was beaten in the first round.

With the kind of fighting Oliviera’s been doing. It’s clear he has made a name for himself as the one to watch in the lightweight division. Many say he’s the new Khabib Nurmagomedov because of his prowess. If anything’s for sure, it’s that he’s going to give Makhachev a tough fight.

Islam Makhachev

Oliviera might be called the new Khabib by fans because of his lightweight success. But it’s important to remember that Islam Makhachev has actually been trained by Khabib Nurmagomedov himself. Nurmagomedov and Makhachev both hail from Dagestan, linking the two fighters with a sense of national pride.

The 30-year-old Makhachev has only lost one fight in the duration of his professional career. In terms of streaks, Makhachev is only one away from Oliviera with ten wins in a row that he has got. His fight with Bobby Green during UFC 202 was killer as fans saw him knock Green clean out in only the primary round.

Famed MMA coach Javier Mendez, who has trained Khabib Nurmagomedov, Frank Shamrock, Cain Velasquez, and BJ Penn, among others, is squarely on Makhachev’s side. He calls Makhachev the ‘Number 1 of all time,’ praising his defence, striking, and all-around game. He claims that Makhachev is the best contender in the current lineup of the lightweight division.

Who’s going to win UFC 280 Makhachev vs Oliviera?

The reality of this is that rankings-wise, Oliveira is the high-ranked adversary that Makhachev has been paired with to dare. Only two of the men in his win streak were top fifteen fighters. Oliviera is a cut above, which has to be quite intimidating. He is, of course, number one at the moment, with Makhachev coming in at number four. Between them are two fighters Oliviera easily defeated. Things are looking good for Oliviera, but Makhachev is a promising fighter. He can easily end up with a surprise win.
